Wig Care Guide
Wig Care Guide
A little care goes a long way. With proper maintenance, your wig can stay soft, natural-looking and beautiful for a long time. Follow these simple steps to keep it in perfect condition.
Know Your Wig Type
- Synthetic wigs: Pre-styled, low maintenance and keep their shape after washing. They are heat-sensitive unless labeled “heat-friendly”.
- Human hair wigs: Can be styled, curled, straightened and colored like natural hair, but need more care and moisture.
Daily Care
- Brush gently with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots.
- Avoid brushing wet synthetic hair, as it can cause stretching and damage.
- Keep your wig away from direct heat sources like ovens, stoves and open flames.
- Avoid wearing your wig while sleeping, swimming or exercising heavily.
How to Wash Your Wig
How often: Every 10-15 wears for synthetic wigs, or every 7-10 wears for human hair wigs. Wash sooner if you use a lot of products.
- Detangle the wig gently before washing.
- Fill a basin with cool to lukewarm water and add a small amount of wig-safe shampoo.
- Dip and swirl the wig gently for 2-3 minutes. Do not rub, scrub or twist.
- Rinse with cool water until all shampoo is removed.
- Condition the lengths and ends only, avoiding the cap and roots. Leave for 2-3 minutes, then rinse.
- Remove extra water by gently pressing it with a clean towel. Never wring the wig.
Drying Your Wig
- Place it on a wig stand or a towel-covered mannequin head and let it air dry naturally.
- Do not use hot hair dryers on synthetic wigs (unless heat-friendly).
- Human hair wigs can be dried on low heat once mostly air-dried.
- Do not brush or style until completely dry.
Styling Tips
- Synthetic wigs: Avoid heat tools. Only use heat if the product is marked heat-friendly, and keep it on a low temperature setting (usually below 160°C / 320°F).
- Human hair wigs: Always use a heat protectant spray before using curling irons or straighteners, and keep the temperature moderate.
- Use light, wig-safe styling products. Avoid heavy oils or sprays that build up on the fibers.
- Avoid bleaching, dyeing or chemical treatments on synthetic wigs. For human hair wigs, have coloring done by a professional.
Storage
- Store your wig on a wig stand or in a silk/satin bag or its original box when not in use.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.
- Do not fold or squash the wig, as this can cause frizz and tangling.
Things to Avoid
- Hot water, harsh shampoos or regular hair products that are not wig-friendly
- Rubbing against rough fabrics like scarves or high collars for long periods (it causes tangling)
- Perfume or hairspray sprayed directly onto the wig
- Sleeping, swimming or showering with the wig on
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Tangling at the back or ends | Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb and a wig detangling spray |
| Frizzy synthetic fibers | Soak in cool water with a little wig conditioner, then air dry |
| Dry or dull human hair | Use a deep conditioner or a few drops of hair oil on the lengths |
| Shedding | Light shedding is normal at first. Avoid rough brushing and pulling |
